tutorial: Mockingjay t-shirt

Written By: Word Nerd Teen - Mar• 20•12

This past week, while I was freaking out about the Hunger Games movie (March 23rd :D ), I saw the Hunger Games mockingjay pin t-shirt and thought it was absolutely beast and I must have it for the premiere. There are two problems with that 1: This shirt cost actual money that I do not have, and 2: Everyone and their dog will be wearing this shirt to the premier. What to do? What to do?  Luckily I have an amazing mother who suggested I make my own and guided me through the process.

You will need:

A plain black t-shirt (pre-washed, no fabric softener)

Gold fabric paint (I used Tulip’s Fashion Glitter Shimmer Paint)

Freezer paper (NOT parchment or wax paper!)

Sponge

Paint brush

x-acto knife

Optional: either black acrylic or fabric paint

First you will need to sketch the pin onto the freezer paper. It is very important to take your time on this step to make sure that it looks exactly like you want it.

Then use an x-acto knife to cut out the pieces to make a stencil. You should have pieces that look like this and the outside piece.

Arrange the pieces to make a stencil on the shirt. Once again, this a very important step so take your time to make it look right. Once they’re placed correctly iron them down to your pre-washed shirt.

Sponge on the gold paint and let dry completely in between coats. Depending on what type of paint you use there may be additional or different instructions.

After the paint has dried overnight carefully peel off the freezer paper.

Use a straight edge and a brush to paint on the arrow and let dry completely in between coats.

After it dries you can leave it like that or you can mix the black and gold paint and brush on some detail. I didn’t add much,  just a little bit to the head of the mockingjay.

You’re done! I personally think that this shirt would go well with a Team Peeta bracelet.

Are you going to the midnight premiere? Do you have something special to wear?

Thanks, Carrie! The shirt made quite a stir at the midnight premiere, especially when people found out she did it for under $5.
