tutorial: Team Peeta bracelet (pattern info)

Written By: Word Nerd - Mar• 14•12

To see how to make the knots to create the bracelet, please see this post.

As always, if you need clarification on something, please leave a comment.  I will answer your questions to the best of my ability.

I created my pattern in Excel.  You have 8 strings to work with, so you will have 8 squares across.  My pattern is 64 rows long, and the bracelet fits perfectly on Word Nerd Teen’s skinny wrist.  You should be able to do about 90 rows with a full skein, but your mileage may vary.

The most basic thing is to color in your squares and create your pattern.  Some people may be able to take that simple pattern and make it work.  I cannot.  I idiot proofed my pattern…to the right you will see a little arrow.  The arrow tells me what direction to read the pattern.  The numbers tell me how many strings take that knot, they read R-L or L-R, depending on the arrow.

The “T” of this pattern would read:

8 Left to Right forward knots

8 Right to Left reverse knots

6 Left to Right forward knots, 1 Left to Right reverse knot, 1 Left to Right forward knot

1 Right to Left reverse knot, 1 Right to Left forward knot, 6 Right to Left reverse knots

1 Left to Right forward knot, 6 Left to Right reverse knots, 1 Left to Right forward knot

1 Right to Left reverse knot, 1 Right to Left forward knot, 6 Right to Left reverse knots

6 Left to Right forward knots, 1 Left to Right reverse knot, 1 Left to Right forward knot

8 Right to Left reverse knots

8 Left to Right forward knots

Confused yet?

Take time to mess around with some short strings to practice your knots, especially alternating between showing your background and letter colors.  I recommend doing about an inch of a checkerboard pattern- once you have conquered that, following a pattern to make letters will be a breeze.

When creating your pattern, don’t discount the importance of the background color.  You will want at least 4 rows of background color between your letters and the ends of the bracelet.  I also recommend that you keep your letters to 6 squares high, creating a border on top and bottom.

Have fun and be creative!
