Monday Munchies: Butterbeer

Written By: Word Nerd - Oct• 03•11

This is NOT a recipe for the Butterbeer sold at WWHP.  Quite frankly, the descriptions of the product sold at WWHP sound sickly and disgusting.  I know it is JK Rowling approved, but, YUCK!

This is how I imagine Butterbeer to taste.  Although Word Nerd Teen likes this recipe, it is not what she imagines it to be.  Perhaps one day she will grace us with a recipe for her version. (ahem–hint!)

This is a simple process with simple ingredients.  You can prepare the creamy base ahead of time, but I don’t recommend mixing the final version until you are ready to serve.

You will need: 2 parts vanilla ice cream, 1 part butterscotch ice cream topping, ginger ale and nutmeg (optional).

Stir together the ice cream and butterscotch syrup until smooth. Heat the mixture for a warm drink, or keep chilled for a cold beverage. (Rocket surgery, right?)

Add one part creamy mixture to the bottom of your glass and top with two parts ginger ale. (Slowly heat the ginger ale for a warm drink, or you will lose the bubbles.) Grate fresh nutmeg on top of the foamy goodness that rises to the top.

It has just enough sweet and creamy goodness to seem slightly decadent, but not so much that you risk diabetic coma by looking at it. If you prefer more sweet and less spice, just use a 1:1 ratio for the cream and the ginger ale.  For what it is worth, everyone in the Word Nerd household liked both versions, but served cold was definitely the favorite.

I apologize for the poor picture quality– my samples were all gone before I realized I needed to re-shoot the pictures!

This is more like what I imagine butter beer to taste. YES! Now I want to have a Harry Potter marathon with my kids and serve all the great foods they mention…especially the butter beer. Can’t get myself to try those nasty jelly bellies *gag-choke!* Super excited!!

We have had *many* HP themed nights at our house!

Some of our snacks included bat wings (chicken wings), potions (sodas with new labels), dragon eggs (scotch eggs), ogre eyes (green olives), treacle cake (gingerbread), wands (big pretzel sticks or licorice)…pretty much any snack you want can be “Potter-ized” with a little imagination, handmade labels and tape!
