tutorial: Banned Books banner

Written By: Word Nerd - Sep• 28•11

I love this little banner.  I know there are tutorials all over for banners/pennants/flags, and this is definitely not the first one I have made…but, this one has a different feel and I really like it.  I am already thinking about making festive banners with our favorite holiday books!

The supplies are freezer paper, cotton fabric for printing (I used unbleached muslin), iron, inkjet printer, secondary fabric (I used plaid flannel) and basic sewing supplies.

Using a piece of printer paper for your template, cut out several 8.5×11 sheets of freezer paper.  Place the freezer paper shiny side down on the plain fabric and iron until the paper sticks to the fabric.  Allow to cool, then trim fabric to the size of the freezer paper.

One at a time (really– trust me on this!) feed your fabric sheets into your printer.  Set them aside for a few minutes to make sure the ink is nice and dry, then press with a hot iron to set the color.  Cut out your triangles.

I wanted a primitive look, so I just eyeballed the next step.  I tore a couple of long strips from the plaid flannel to string the flags.  I cut 12 flannel flags, just slightly larger (1/2″ all around) than my printed flags.  Remove the freezer paper from your printed flags (it just peels right off) and pin them to the flannel flags.

Pin the flags to the long strips and stitch it all together.  I needed mine to look a little more “rugged”, so I used a pair of scissors to fray the edges.  Just pull the scissors along the edge of the fabric, exactly like you are using curling ribbon.

Hang it on the wall and be happy.  That’s it.

I chose books that mean something to me, as well as the following verse:

The more you read, the more you know:

The more you know, the more you grow:

The more you grow, the stronger your voice,

When speaking your mind and making your choice!

Feel free to use mine (below), but you will enjoy it more with your own books on it.  I used Publisher to draw three triangles per page, then pasted in my graphics.
