tutorial: Newsprint Nails

Written By: Word Nerd - Aug• 19•11

Welcome to our first-ever tutorial!  We still have a long way to go…we need more pictures and better pictures…but, it is a start. First, I found several different places with instructions on how to transfer newsprint onto your nails and I assembled all the supplies.  This is how it was supposed to work:  Paint the nails a pale base color.  Wet a square of newsprint with vodka, then press it firmly against the dry nail.  Carefully lift the newsprint straight up and the words will be left behind.  Seal with a clear top coat. Neat, right?  Not so much. You may not have noticed, but the ink used by newspapers has evolved over time.  Soy-based inks are better for the planet, but bad for Silly Putty and nail art. Determined to have newsprint nails, we decided to improvise.   1.  Paint nails with a base coat and dry thoroughly. 2.  Cover nails with a very thin coat of glue.  We used decopauge glue, but I think white school glue would work just as well.  Do NOT use super glue, E6000, or other heavy duty glues! 3. Thorughly wet a small square of newsprint.  Since it was already out for the failed attempt, we used vodka.  I don’t think it really matters, as long as it is thoroughly wet. 4. Press the wet newsprint square onto the nail and smooth down.  It is helpful to use an orange stick to lightly define the nail bed. 5.  Let the nails dry.  Let them really, really dry.  We tried the next part with the paper still damp and it does not work.  You can’t rush this part– let everything dry completely. 6.  Using your nail (or an emery board) as a guide, slowly tear away the excess paper surrounding the nail.  Don’t worry about making it look perfect at this point! 7.  Apply a clear polish to the newsprint.  Allow to dry. 8.  Use an emery board to clean up any rough edges.  The tips of the nails will definitely need smoothing.  You may also need to straighten up the edges of the paper around the nail bed.  It just takes a couple of quick passes with the emery board to smooth away problem spots. 9.  Remove dust and loose fibers from the nails and add one more coat of clear polish.  You’re done! A few things to keep in mind: * Be aware of what you are getting in your newsprint squares. We found an article on a dog park. * Thin newsprint is easier to work with than thick papers. You could probably use pages from a cheap paperback. * Decide in what direction you want to run the print. We did all different directions…once Word Nerd Teen pointed out that the words on the first three fingers ran vertically, and the fourth ran horizontally. Have fun! UPDATE:   It has been a week since the nails were done and they still look great!  We are so happy with the nails and the fact that people are actually reading our blog, we want to share the love with a giveaway.  We will announce the first giveaway once we reach 25 followers, the second give-away at 50 followers and the third giveaway at 100 followers.  If we reach the 100 mark by September 1st, we will host a fourth giveaway.  Just click to follow and wait for the fun…

This is such a creative idea! I can’t believe some people have actually used vodka to stick the newspaper onto their fingernails. I like your idea of using the glue! The vodka sounds a little messy!

I have seen a lot of glitter toe tutorials, and none of them have really encouraged me to do something this fun with my fingernails and toenails.

I’m definitely following your blog now! I can’t wait to see what other fun things you have in store to share with me and all of your other readers!

I would love to see you stop by my blog, and link this up on my “Sundae Shake Up” party. I’m sure all of the ladies over there would love to see your fingernail tutorial too!
