Scrabble® is a blood sport in my family.  From the age of 8, children are expected to play no holds barred Scrabble®- no hints, no mercy.  As a result, by the age of about 10, children in our family can take on just about anyone in Scrabble® and, if not win, give them a real run for their money.

Imagine my delight when I ran across the following picture:

City leaders in Jackson Heights (Queens, NY) have installed a commemmorative street sign to honor the birthplace of one of the best selling board games of all time.  Created during the Great Depression by unemployed architect Alfred Mosher Butts, Scrabble® is now sold in 121 countries and can be found in over 1/3 of the homes in North America.

This is actually the second sign erected, the first have disappeared under mysterious circumstances several years ago. Some think that it may have been nabbed by an ardent Scrabble® fan, but there is one fatal flaw in that theory– Any real Scrabble® fan knows that “35th” is not an acceptable play!
